Dinara Safina withdrew from Indian Wells because of a continuing back injury. Here is the short statement from her website:
"Unfortunately, I will not be able to play in Indian Wells this year because of the back injury that's been bothering me since the end of last season.
Thanks to all my fans for their support during this difficult period. Keep checking my site for updates on my recovery."
Safina has played just two events in 2010. She withdrew from the season-opener in Brisbane because of the back injury, then reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open tuneup in Sydney before bowing out in Melbourne with a fourth- round loss to fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.
She is still listed in the field for the Sony Ericsson Open, which begins March 23 in Miami.
