Venus Williams win the WTA's Sony Ericsson Championships for the first time in the career, defeating Vera Zvonareva 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 on Sunday at the season-ending event in Doha.
"I'm so excited," Williams said. "It was a hard-fought match right down to the end, we were both wanting it so bad. I'm glad I got it."
Venus won $1.34 million at the event, which for the first time offered the same prize money as the men at the ATP's season-ending Masters Cup.
Venus will improve on WTA ranking list from No. 8 to to No. 6, while the ninth-ranked Zvonareva also will move up two spots.
"I know I can go higher" in the rankings, said the 28-year-old Venus.
Zvonareva had dominated her round-robin group, beating Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanvovic and Jelena Jankovic, the world number one, before beating Elena Dementieva in the semi-final.
"I think I could have done better today and obviously I'm a little bit disappointed. But it's the first time I'm able to win so many matches in a row against top-10 players and I'm just looking forward to next year." said Vera.
