Rafael Nadal on Monday confirmed he will not compete in the Davis Cup final against Argentina this month due to a knee injury.
"After a long and very positive season, it pains me to miss the two main objectives of the year, the Shanghai (Masters) and Davis (Cup) final," he said.
"This is a difficult time, but I have done everything possible to try and make this final.
"I am used to playing with pain, but this is a new and different kind of pain, which I can't manage to control," he told the press conference.
Catalan player Marcel Granollers, world-ranked no. 56 and winner at ATP Houston, quarterfinalist at Acapulco, Warsaw and Amersfoot, was called to replace injured Rafael Nadal; moreover, he will make his debut at the Davis Cup.
"If Rafa had been available, Granollers would have come as a replacement," Sanchez Vicario confirmed.
The other players chosen by Sanchez-Vicario are David Ferrer (world ranked no. 12), Fernando Verdasco (16) and Feliciano Lopez (31). The replacement player is Santi Ventura (122).
"Feliciano can adapt his game to the surface Argentina picked; the same happens with David and Fernando," he added.
Sanchez Vicario also admitted that Granollers (the big surprise in the team) is a player with "a lot of potential" in addition to having "great future value" and having great talent to play "either at the singles or at the doubles."
