French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was beaten 6-7 (0/7), 7-5, 6-1 by Vera Dushevina in the first round of the women's singles at Wimbledon on Monday.
Schiavone, who was a quarterfinalist at the All England Club last year, committed 38 unforced errors and struggled with her serve in the final set.
"It was a different surface, a different feeling," said Schiavone. "She played very well. I didn't take my chances. I'll work like always - you can enjoy wins, but at the end you have to come back to work."
Dushevia, a junior Wimbledon champion in 2002, said:
"Francesca is champion at Roland Garros, but there's a lot of difference between clay and grass.I was the junior champion here and I know how to play on grass. Last year I played against her on clay and beat her, and on clay for me it's tougher than on the grass, so I felt good."
