John Isner and Nicholas Mahut became Wimbledon legends last night after the longest tennis match in history. They began their first-round match on Tuesday, and they played the first four sets until they stretched into the darkness. The score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3). They would play the fifth set on Wednesday, on Court 18.
So on Wednesday, Isner and Mahut resumed hostilities at a little after 2 o’clock London time. And incredibly, after exactly 10 hours on court, the play was suspended at 9.09pm due to darkness with the final set deadlocked at 59-59! This thriller is is set to continue into Thursday.
Interviewed by the BBC as they made their way off court, Mahut said: “He (Isner) is just a champ, we're just fighting like we never did before. We're going to come back tomorrow and see who will win. The crowd is just fantastic; they'll have to come back tomorrow.”
When asked how he managed to hold serve to level with Isner 59 times in the final set, Mahut explained: “I just wanted to win the game I was playing, that was it.”
“Nothing like this will ever happen again, ever,” declared Isner. “He's serving fantastic, I’m serving fantastic, that’s all there is to it."
I'm just wondering why there isn't some rule situations like this one?? I wouldn't let players play more then for example 4-5 hours! This isn't human, to play for 10 hours! I'm surprised they were able to leave the court on their feet!
Congrats guys!
