Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II returned to Wimbledon on Thursday for the first time in 33 years. The queen, wearing a turquoise summer coat and matching brimmed hat with white trim and holding a small bouquet, was escorted through the grounds. The last time she visited the tournament in her 1977, the year Virginia Wade won the women’s singles title for Britain.
After her 20-minute walkabout, Queen met a receiving line of the world’s tennis elite, including the top four seeds in the ladies' singles - Serena and Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic - and three leading male players - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick, plus icons such as Billie Jean King and nine-time champion Martina Navratilova.
Roddick received the invitation because fourth seed Andy Murray was warming up for his 1pm match on Centre Court in front of the Queen.
Rafael Nadal, who was also invited but said it was impossible to attend as he too was preparing for his match, later stressed that he had great respect for the British royal family and for Wimbledon's traditions but said: "Today is a game day. I had my things to do."
