Juan Martin del Potro, who hasn't been playing since the Australian Open in January, will undergo surgery on his right wrist on Tuesday. In his statement, he said that the operation will be carried out by Dr. Richard Berger, director of hand surgery at the Mayo Clinic in the city of Rochester, Minnesota, US.
“I will have surgery today, Tuesday 4th May, on my right wrist,” said del Potro. “I have tried all season to avoid surgery by trying different treatments but, evidently, the injury was more serious.
“When I arrived in the United States, Dr. Berger did tests when I was on court and did different studies to specifically locate the points where I felt pain. From there, he made the decision to operate.”
He added: “As you will all understand, this is not a happy moment in my life. But I’m used to battling through adversity and I have the strength to come through this. The recovery time will be lengthy, but it depends on many factors that today I can’t assess because it’s too soon.
“I will spend the first few days after the operation in Rochester and then I will return to Argentina where, with more precision, I will be able to explain each step of my recovery.”
