Ana, Ana what's happening with you??

Posted by Lana On 8/29/2008 07:10:00 AM

OK, this is really funny. I've been reading all those articles about Ana's loss 6-3 4-6 6-3 from 188th-ranked Frenchwoman Julie Coin and the statements she gave after the match and I just can't believe what I read! Ana dear, stop making excuses and stop thinking about yourself that high.

"Asked if she had been feeling the pressure of being the top ranked player, she replied: "No, I think I deserve that position. I won a grand slam and I was playing really well."

What did you do this year to think you actually deserve the top spot?? I'm Serbian and I'm happy to have Serbian girl on No.1 position, but you can't say things like that.

And no girl, you don't deserve the position No.1, Dinara Safina for example do, or Serena who's been playing really good this year and who won...how many Grand Slams??? I think you know that answer Ana...eight Grand Slam titles and two Olympic golds...

In 2002. when she was No.1 she won all three Grand Slams and Australian Open in 2003, so that means she held all four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously!

Or just look at Rafael Nadal and what he did this year, that's how No. 1 player should play!

You won a Grand Slam, OK, congratulations on that, but you can't mention it every time you lose in the second or third round. What about Wimbledon? Third round loss....not to mention Rome, Montreal...

According to an on-site WTA official, this US Open lost was the biggest upset of a No. 1-seeded woman since the current rankings system was devised in 1975. And Ana is the first No. 1 seed to lose in the second round of the U.S. Open since 1967.

  1. Anonymous Said,

Not just that, but if Henin didnt retired everybody be fighting for #2, cause Justine was about 2000 points ahead of them.

And you said it Lana, from the girls that are consistent this year in the tour are Safina, Serena and even Dementieva. Those ones can be at number 1 anytime.

For the near future I will like to see in the top ten Wozniacki, Cibulkova and Cornet...they are playing great tennis.

  2. Jcon Said,

Lana - I think you are forgetting that Ana had a great first half of the season before this downward spiral.

  3. Lana Said,

Doha(February), Dubai(Feb) and Miami(March) was in the first part of the year and she also lost in second or third round.

Here is the page where you can see Ana's results from this year. Only 3 good tournaments, nothing else...

  4. Jcon Said,

    AO Finals...RG Championship?

  5. Lana Said,

I know that, but it's just not enough...not enough for the sentence: "I think I deserve that position. I won a grand slam and I was playing really well."

There are currently better players and players who simply deserves No.1 spot more then she does. That's all I tried to say with this post.

  6. Anonymous Said,

Hang in there, Lana. While her stats for the year looks spotty, try and keep it in context. In Doha she withdrew due to ankle injury. Lost in the SF of Sydney to Henin, but then went on to reach the finals of AO. Dubai she lost to Dementieva, but then went on a few weeks later to win Indian Wells. Miami she lost to Davenport right after she had just won Indian Wells (which at the time was her biggest tournament win). Reaches the SF at Berlin, losing to Dementieva again. Loses first round at Rome where 30 minutes before she took the court she got the news that Henin retired. But despite those "bad" resuts on clay, she went on to win RG. After winning her first slam, she comes into Wimbly understandably with no preparation and loses to Zheng Jie, who eventually makes it to the SF. After Wimbly she hurts her hand and the rest is recent history.

To me, her worst loss of the season was the loss to Zheng. That one ticked me off.

As for the #1 ranking, no one really deserves it right now. Ana happens to hold that spot right now but everyone, including she, knows she's not playing like it. But as we all know, rankings aren't determined by one week stretches of play, or even 3 month stretches of play. They're determined by a 52 week rolling calendar. And in that 52 weeks it's hard to argue that Ana hasn't been the best.

I hope Serena can win so that she can right the ship and establish a "true and undisputable" #1 at the top.

Sorry for the long post. It was my hopefully successful attempt to make you feel better!

  7. Lana Said,

Hey c note, thanks for the comment, I like to hear other people's opinion so feel free to write as long posts as you want!

And I know, and you are right for some things and facts, but she doesn't have the constant in her game. I think it's more important to be constantly good and have good results on all tournaments then win one and then be nowhere on the next few!
And if we're talking about the points that counts, I think Jelena is the one that deserves the No.1 spot, she is first on the Race list.

Actually what annoys me the most is that Ana's pretentious behavior. She's not really better the any of the top ten players, so she should just come to earth a little.

  8. Anonymous Said,

I wouldn't use the Race points as a measure for #1 because it counts every tournament you play in the year. JJ has played 4 more tournaments than Ana yet only leads by 150 points.

I think I'm the opposite of you. I would rather a player win big and lose big rather than a consistent player that gets far but never has that big win (a la JJ). Because to me that means that at your best, you can beat everyone. You have the game and the potential to do it and because of that, people fear you and you're always a favorite to win. That's just me though. I know a lot of people feel the other way.

As for Ana, I guess you can read that quote as being pretentious or arrogant. I see it as true though. And she did admit in the same presser that she wasn't playing like a #1.

Maria, Ana, Serena, and Venus are the only ones who can say that they can be and deserve to be #1 because they've proven it with their grand slam wins and their careers. Dinara has had a great run but her loss at RG and Beijing prevent her from being in that category at the moment. Same with Elena, she's had a very very solid season but other than the Olympics she hasn't had that big win. As for JJ, there is an argument to be made that she's #1 because of consistency, but again, she's never proven that on the big stage she can stand above the rest. And no one is scared of her.
