Bob Bryan and Liezel Huber defeated Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Kveta Peschke 6-4, 6-4 to win US Open title, their second Grand Slam title in mixed doubles and and this was only their second time playing as a team. They won Roland Garros in 2009.
"We hit some reflexes, got some returns in play. Ham and eggs," Bryan said. "We tell each other to be aggressive. I think that's when we play our best tennis. We sometimes guide the ball, so I tell her to be aggressive and she tells me."
"When we played Melanie and Ryan, we were just pushing the ball; when we started being aggressive, it was easier," Huber said. "Bob is very supportive. He says, 'I don't care if you miss the ball. Just keep hitting it.'"
"In mixed doubles things can go wrong. You're never really safe. You can be up 5-2 and it's 5-all in a heartbeat," Bryan added. "You have to keep lighthearted. I think the smiles are what got us through. Yeah, smiles."
Qureshi become the first Pakistani player to ever reach a Grand Slam final. And he did it twice at this year's US Open with a spot in the men's doubles final alongside teammate Rohan Bopanna of India.
After the trophy ceremony on court, Bryan congratulated Qureshi on advancing to both the mixed and men's doubles finals, and he announced that the Bryan Brothers Foundation will be making a donation to aid the flood relief efforts in Qureshi's native Pakistan.
"Those guys (Qureshi and his doubles partner Rohan Bopanna) are great guys," Bryan said. "Everyone in the locker room likes them. Just hearing about the problem in Pakistan, I talked about it with my brother and my dad, and we just wanted to do it. Qureshi didn't know about it, but as soon as this tournament is over we'll write a check and do it."
