Sam Querrey defeated Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-3 in 2 hours and 22 minutes at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles to win his fourth title of the year.
"All four matches were really exciting this week," said Querrey after the win. "It was nice to get through them all and it feels great. This is the first time that I've actually tried to defend a title because the Vegas tournament went away.
"The last two sets today were great, Andy is one of those players who allows me to hit my shots."
Murray said: "It was a good week. Disappointed to lose today but if you take the circumstances into consideration I have to be happy with getting to the final. I had a good week, I enjoyed it.
"Each match I felt better physically. I played reasonably well today, better than the other matches."
In the doubles final, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan beat Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-7(6), 6-2, 10-7 to win a record-breaking 62nd tour-level doubles title together.
Mike Bryan said: “It’s sweet, feels awesome, hanging out with family and friends after the match. It’s a cool feeling.”
Bob Bryan said: “Sixty two brings a smile to our face. It’s been an emotional ride, talking about it every day for the past couple of months. To finally do it is incredible. There were definitely nerves out there and those guys were playing great. It was a very hard fought match. Our legs felt like jelly, arms spaghetti… It was a flood of emotion. I never thought we’d be this consistent, this healthy our whole career. Sixty one looked like it was on the other side of the moon. If you stay consistent, and never give up on each other – even in dry spells - anything can happen. We’ve never given up on each other.”
Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Potito Starace 6-4, 6-4 to win the ATP Studena Croatia Open title. This was his third ATP World Tour title of the year and the 15th tour-level trophy of his career.
"I'm very happy about this tournament. It gives me a lot of confidence to go and practice on hard now," said Ferrero. "It was an amazing week. I had a bit of pain in my knee but I kept motivated and it was great to come through. It was the fourth final I've played this year and I've won three tournaments so it's a great feeling."
"Since the beginning of the week I played very consistent and aggressive," assessed Ferrero. "Today I didn't let Potito dominate the points. I know he can be dangerous with his forehand so I tried to move him around and play to his backhand."
For Starace this was his third ATP World Tour final and first since reaching the Valencia (l. to Almagro) and Kitzbuhel (l. to Monaco) finals in 2007.
"Today was a tough match. He played very well especially on his serve. I was a bit tired but he played a perfect game," reflected Starace.
"I will try next time. I'm playing good tennis so I want to carry on and do something special. I am very close to playing my best tennis. I lost today but he played a great match. I want to try and improve my ranking in the next two-three months and try and get back to the Top 30."
In the doubles final, Leos Friedl and Filip Polasek beat defending champions Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak 6-3, 7-6(7) to win their first ATP World Tour doubles title together.
"It feels great. It's always a good feeling to win a tournament," said Polasek. "It was a special final for me today with a Slovakian playing on both sides. I enjoyed it a lot; it was a great feeling to win.
"Umag is a great tournament," added the Slovakian. "We're happy playing here. There's a great atmosphere with lots of Slovakian and Czech fans here on holiday. They gave us great support from the first round onwards, so I'd like to thank them for giving us energy and providing all the support."
Nicolas Almagro defeated Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-1 in the final of the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad to win his second trophy in three weeks.
"I played my best tennis today," said Almagro. "I returned well and served amazingly. The altitude doesn't make it easier here, but it's nice to face that challenge. I realised during the first set that Richard had trouble with his serve."
"It wasn't easy from the beginning of the week," said Gasquet. "I just started serving on the Friday before the tournament because I had problems with my shoulder. It became worse last night. Also Nicolas was playing well so it was very difficult today."
In the doubles final, Johan Brunstrom and Jarkko Nieminen beat Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares 6-3, 6-7(4), 11-9 to win their first ATP World Tour doubles title together.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” declared Brunstrom. “It was my seventh final and the way we won it…it was an unbelievable point and just an incredible feeling. I’ve been a good friend of Jarkko’s for a long time. It was the first time we ever played together after talking about it many times. Now, when we finally played, we played unbelievably together.
“They are a very tough team and they played well. We knew it was going to come down to a few points here and there. We tried to stay in every point and did our best," added the Swede.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Elena Vesnina 57 75 64 in the final of the Istanbul Cup to win her second career title.
"I don't really know what to think right now," Pavlyuchenkova said. "Elena played really well and aggressively and didn't let me play my game. I knew if I won the second set I had a good chance of winning the match. It was so hot, I was still tired from my match yesterday, my legs were dead... but I really wanted to win the title and kept fighting every point. I'm so happy to win my second title."
Vesnina, who celebrated her 24th birthday on finals day, said: "It was tough conditions, but we both fought until the end. I started feeling ill at the end of the second set but I pushed myself as hard as I could. I'm proud of myself for sticking in there. It has been a great week and I have to give credit to Anastasia, she played very well and deserved the win."
In the doubles final, Eleni Daniilidou and Jasmin Woehr beat Maria Kondratieva and Vladimira Uhlirova, 64 16 119 to win their first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title together.
Victoria Azarenka defeated Maria Sharapova 64 61 to claim her first title of the year at the Bank Of The West Classic.
"Once she's on a roll, it's really hard to keep up. So I just tried to stay with her from the beginning and stay aggressive," Azarenka said. "In my last two matches against her, I had my chances but did not take them. That was one of the important things, I didn't let her get back into the games in the second set.
"I knew I had to fight every single ball with her."
Sharapova, who won her last two meetings with Azarenka, was trying to become the first player to win three titles on the Tour this year, having triumphed at Memphis and Strasbourg.
"I went up 4-3 then played a really sloppy game, then she really stepped it up and took advantage of it," Sharapova said. "She's always tough to play against. She's had a lot of big wins in her career already and she's one of the most consistent, hard-hitting players out there. I'll take the positives out of the week, go to the next tournaments and keep working towards the Open."
In the doubles final, Lindsay Davenport and Liezel Huber beat Chan Yung-Jan and Zheng Jie 75 67(8) 108.
"It was a great tournament," Davenport said. "It wasn't easy for me at the start of the week having not played, but Liezel helped me get better all week."
"I am so happy to have had the opportunity to play with Lindsay," Huber said. "I am so glad she decided to come out of her hiatus. She played so amazing all week. Today was a great match that could have gone either way. Zheng and Chan were tough opponents and certainly pushed us to the limit."
