Kim Clijsters overcame three match points to beat Maria Sharapova 2-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 in the final of the Cincinnati Open. With this victory, she became the first player to win three titles this year, already winning Brisbane and Miami.
"I was so close to losing and then this dark cloud came," said Clijsters. "I thought I was hitting well from the baseline with her but my serve wasn't working well. During the delay I had to regroup and refocus, and when we came back to the court I played aggressively and turned it around. I'm really happy to win."
Sharapova, who was playing her fifth final of the year, had three championship points at 5-3 in the second set before rain led to a 74-minute break.
"I had a wonderful week. It was my first week here and I had a wonderful welcome from all the fans and tournament," Sharapova said at the trophy ceremony. "Congratulations to Kim on a great match and great tournament, I look forward to playing her again soon. I'll definitely be back next year."
In the doubles final, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko beat Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8) to win their first title together.
"We had to come up with different things. If we played the same way, they would have adapted and taken advantage of it," Azarenka said. "Both of them have really good serves and it was tough to keep up, but we mixed it up and tried to be aggressive, and just tried to not let them play their game.
"It's not about who's a singles player or a doubles player. It's about what you can bring out on the court. They have experience you cannot even imagine - we had to fight and come up with something special every time."
This was eighth WTA Tour doubles title for Kirilenko and fourth for Azarenka.
"From the first round you start to understand your partner more and more. We just talked a lot while we were playing," Kirilenko said. "All titles, singles or doubles, feel good. I'm happy to win today and Victoria played really well."
"It was great to play with Maria. Maybe later we can play some more together," Azarenka said. "It was also great to see so many people watching today. It's amazing when so many people come to watch doubles. It's good energy."
Andy Murray defeated Roger Federer 7-5, 7-5 in Toronto final to win his first ATP World Tour title of the season and defend his Rogers Cup crown.
Murray becomes just the fifth player to beat Nadal and Federer in the same event and becomes the first man to win back-to-back Canadian hardcourt titles since Andre Agassi in 1995.
"Winning a tournament is always great, but it's the first time I beat Roger and Rafa in the same tournament, which is probably the most pleasing thing, and then didn't drop a set against either of them," he said. "So it's good for the confidence for the next few weeks."
"Just felt pretty calm on the court all week, and that's if you can put sort of the emotions and how you're feeling into I guess the way you're playing rather than sort of showing it after every point, sort of saving up and putting into the points and the rallies," said Murray. "I felt like it worked well. It was one of the best weeks I've had. It was just kind of expressing myself with the way I was playing. I played pretty free flowing tennis and didn't get too nervous."
Federer, who was trying to win his 17th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title and his second title of the year, was pleased with his play despite the loss, in his first event since a crushing quarter-final loss at Wimbledon.
“Today was another tough match physically with the breaks, coming back, the breaks, coming back, and with all the physical strain I had to go through this week,” said Federer. “Honestly I'm feeling actually pretty good, considering. That's definitely a good sign for what's to come.
“It was particularly hard being down 0-3, running behind the score, and still losing the first set. Not coming through there obviously was a bit of a blow, and then the rain delays completely shut it down for me to get any kind of rhythm. It was played on a couple points here and there, and it didn't even feel like the end of the match. Just all of a sudden it was all over. So it was just a touch disappointing. I thought he played well. He was aggressive. He was taking the ball early. He wasn't giving me much, and he clutch served at the very end when he had to, and he deserved the victory.”
In the doubles final, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan beat Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra 6-3, 7-5 to win seventh title of the year and to reclaim the World No. 1 individual doubles ranking.
"We were lucky today. We played the best match of the year,” said Mike Bryan. “We had a great week. It is one of our favourite weeks of the year. We will be back in 2012!"
