Caroline Wozniacki, number one seed for the season's final grand slam US Open, defeated Nadia Petrova 6-3 3-6 6-3 to win the New Haven Open crown the third year in a row.
"Today was especially tough because yesterday I finished really late," Wozniacki said. "In the second set Nadia started hitting some nice winners, and she broke my serve straight away. I just needed to keep focused.
"The crowd has been amazing here, cheering me on. Yesterday I was down and they got me through it. It's a great feeling. I love this tournament - it has been great preparation for me the last couple of years. I'd love to come back."
It was the second title of the week for Caroline, who won in Monteral on Monday. She has now won her last two tournaments - Montréal and New Haven - and three of her last four, including Copenhagen.
"I've had two victories in two weeks and three victories in four weeks. I feel I'm in great shape and playing well. Hopefully I can continue the next few weeks."
In the doubles final, Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik beat Bethanie Battek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy 75 60 to win their second Premier-level title of the year.
"They were playing so fast in the first set but somehow we handled it and won the set. To win 6-0 in the second set is unbelievable," Peschke said. "I don't know how it happened but we're happy it did and it's great to win a final again. It was a great match and every win gives you confidence. A title is even sweeter."
This was 16th Tour doubles title for Peschke and 23rd for Srebotnik.
Sergiy Stakhovsky defeated Denis Istomin 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the Pilot Pen Tennis title and to improve his perfect record in ATP World Tour finals to 4-0. He has won the title all four times he has reached an ATP World Tour semi-final.
Stakhovsky, who won the 's-Hertogenbosch title earlier in the year, is the first Ukrainian to win two titles in a season since Andrei Medvedev in 1994.
“I have no idea [why I have a perfect record in finals]," Stakhovsky said. "I'm really happy to keep the score this way, to be able to be the winner of this match today. As I believe everybody saw, it was really more playing on nerves. There were a lot of unforced errors. There were really a lot of good rallies, and I hope it was really enjoyable tennis we played. I have to say it definitely wasn't our best tennis from both of us. But we were trying as hard as we could. Definitely we were fighting for everything.
“It was really an exhausting week for me. A lot of three sets. A lot of tie-breaks. Just a lot of time on court. Just now I have to get myself together and get ready for the US Open. I'm really glad to win this title. It pushed me to another level again. But I just need to think forward again and get ready.”
In the doubles final, Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau beat Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 6-4, 7-5 to claim their fourth title of the season and to boost their chances of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
“Since we started in March, we’ve had our ups and downs,” Lindstedt said. “It's tough getting started because both me and Horia, we have a pretty strong will, we like to see our tennis in a certain way. I think we're both learning to give up part of our own way of looking at tennis in order to help out each other. When we connect like that, play well, we're a very dangerous team. We play very aggressive and quick doubles."
Tecau added: “I think it's two very important things: trust and confidence. We learned how to trust each other, how to be confident in each other's game. We practise well together and we managed to find a good relationship on court, like a good attitude and a good way to be on court. That made a big difference for us to play good matches and lose or win those tough matches."
