Believe it or nor, Ana won two matches in a raw, which didn't happen since Rome in May when she reached the semifinals. After defeating Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open in Cincinnati, Ana yesterday beat Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-1, 7-5.
"I'm really happy," said Ana. "A little bit tired from all the stop and goes, but it's been a good match today, especially in the first set. I was playing really well, so I was very pleased with that.
"She's a tough opponent, and I expected a tough match. She did come back strong in the second.
"I think this was a match probably with three matches in it. But with every delay, with every new start, it was different conditions. First it was really hot; second time around it was really gusty; third time around it cooled off and the balls were not flying as much. It was a whole different aspect of the game."
Commenting on her style of play, Ana said: "I think it's important to be aggressive as well in these moments. Yet there is a fine line between being aggressive and rushing. So I really found that balance today, and I'm really happy I could turn around the second set a little bit."
Ana will meet in the third round Elena Vesnina who beat current French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4 6-4.
Beside this great news, there is something else. Ana announced on her website that she declined wild card into the main draw of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal, which begins on Sunday.
Ana, who was the champion in 2006, had her initial request turned down several weeks ago and was supposed to play qualifying. But tournament director Eugene Lapierre contacted Ana’s management company on Tuesday with the new invitation.
“I would have loved to have played in Montreal, but I was quite hurt by the comments of Mr Lapierre that I was shown in The Montreal Gazette recently.
“I don’t think his comments were necessary, and they contradicted everything he had told my management previously: that I was not getting a wild card because I am not Canadian.
“The fact that my original request was turned down isn’t really an issue: I would have been happy to play qualifying, but I felt that they kind of stepped over the line with this interview, making public our correspondence and even misrepresenting it. Unfortunately I don’t feel welcome at this tournament.
“Anyway, I am playing New Haven in a week or so, and I am currently at my third straight event (Cincinnati). Even though I haven’t played many matches, the training and travel take their toll, and I think this is the right decision to make, for several reasons.
“I’m sorry to anyone who was hoping to see me play in Canada this year. I’d like to thank the fans in Montreal who supported me during the two times I played there. I really enjoyed it.”
Right decision girl, I would decline it too!
