Kaia Kanepi defeated Flavia Pennetta 64 63 to win her first career title in Palermo and to become Estonia's first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour champion
"I'm very happy to win my first career title," a thrilled Kanepi said afterwards. "This is the best moment of my career. After doing well at Wimbledon, now I've confirmed I'm playing really well. Flavia was playing well but today I was more aggressive in the most important moments of the match."
In the doubles final, Alberta Brianti and Sara Errani triumphed over Jill Craybas and Goerges, 64 61.
Agnes Szavay defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 62 16 62 to win her second straight tournament - and 10th straight match at the International-level ECM Prague Open by Glanzis.
"I was very tired, mainly in the second set but also in the third. I was also nervous," Szavay said. "But I fought with myself and broke it. It's very nice to have a second title in a row. I've been working very hard and this is the reward."
"All week I was playing very good tennis. It's a shame I don't have a trophy," Zahlavova Strycova said. "In the third set I thought Agnes would be tired and it would be simple for me, but that wasn't the case. Congratulations to her today."
In the doubles final, Timea Bacsinszky and Tathiana Garbin won for the second straight week, following their Budapest doubles title with the Prague doubles title. They beat Szavay and Monica Niculescu 75 76(4).
Nicolas Almagro beat defending champion Robin Soderling 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 to win SkiStar Swedish Open, his sixth ATP World Tour title.
“It’s a great feeling to win here,” said Almagro. “It’s always amazing to win a final and I’m very happy with the week. I’m going to enjoy this moment and then prepare for next week in Hamburg.”
“I didn’t play very well in the 2007 final here, but today I fought very hard and I’m really happy with the physical and mental sides to my game,” reflected Almagro. “It was a big match, a big fight and we were both battling like gladiators. Robin is a great player and I’m sure he will have many more chances to win this tournament in the future.”
In the doubles final, Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau won their third ATP World Tour doubles title together Sunday in Bastad as they defeated Andreas Seppi and Simone Vagnozzi 6-4, 7-5.
Albert Montanes won MercedesCup in Stuttgart, his second ATP World Tour title of the season, after Gael Monfils was forced to retire with a right ankle injury; Montanes had been leading 6-2, 1-2.
"I played very well. In the first set I played good in the rallies and my confidence was good," reflected Montanes. "I am very happy with the win today. It is unbelievable for me. All week I played unbelievably. I’m very happy about this week. The Mercedes [I won] is very nice."
"I twisted my ankle on the court and it was impossible to finish the match," said Monfils. "The week was good. I played pretty good tennis, a lot of confidence came back. To reach a final again was pretty exciting. I had a bad experience (today) but hopefully it will be better soon and I can get back to my best level and try to reach some other finals."
In the doubles final, Carlos Berlocq and Eduardo Schwank beat Christopher Kas and Philipp Petzschner 7-6(5), 7-6(6) to win their first ATP World Tour title together.
