A sixth-seeded duo Katarina Srebotnik and Nenad Zimonjic defeated an unseeded tandem Yaroslava Shvedova and Julian Knowle 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (11-9) to capture the mixed doubles title at the 2010 French Open.
"They played really well. It was very close," Srebotnik said. "We just stayed focused and kept playing the way we wanted to play. We believed in it."
This was the second Grand Slam mixed doubles title for Srebotnik and Zimonjic; they won it also in Paris in 2006.
"The key to winning this tournament was believing in ourselves even with all the ups and downs, and all the really close matches," Zimonjic said. "We believed until the end we could come through. We did it a couple of years ago."
About that second serve ace on match point Srebotnik joked:
"I was just thinking, 'Please ace him.' He didn't do it on the first serve, but he did it on the second."
"Julian is very aggressive with the returns. He's one of the best returners in the game," Zimonjic said. "I had to take a lot of chances on the second serves. Before that, I was going up the T a lot, so that time I said, 'Okay, let's change it up.' I wasn't planning on hitting an ace. I just wanted to hit a strong, heavy second serve. He was guessing I'd go up the T, and that's why it was an ace.
"You have to believe in your shots. You have to go for them."
