Dinara Safina and Maria Martinez Sanchez both pulled out of the Wimbledon tennis championships through injury, organisers said Saturday.
Safina, who joins fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in withdrawing from the tournament, has been struggling with low back injury for several months. She spent three months on the sidelines after the injury flared up during her fourth-round contest at the Australian Open in January.
As she was seeded 20 her position in the draw is taken by Melanie Oudin who will be listed as the 33rd seed. The space left by Oudin has been filled by Canadian lucky loser Stephanie Dubois.
Maria Martinez Sanchez has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a knee injury. As she was seeded 22 her position in the draw is taken by Kateryna Bondarenko who will be listed as the 34th seed. Bondarenko's place will be filled by lucky loser Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia.
