Jelena Jankovic, Katarina Srebotnik and Kimiko Date-Krumm all received their 2010 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Awards during the opening ceremonies of their Fed Cup ties yesterday.
Jelena Jankovic, who won her first match against Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6, 6-3, received the award in Belgrade, where she is leading the Serbian team in their World Group play-off tie against Slovak Republic. She said: “This award means a lot to me, having played Fed Cup for 10 years and really given my maximum in each match. It is an honour to play for my country and I want to win as many matches as possible. I am happy and really proud.”
The other two winners, Katarina Srebotnik and Kimiko Date-Krumm, faced each other in the opening rubber of Slovenia’s World Group II play-off tie against Japan in Maribor.
Srebotnik, who missed most of the 2009 season through injury, was unbeaten as Slovenia qualified for the play-offs from Europe/Africa Zone Group I. She said: “It means a lot to me because I had a tough year last year so it was quite tough for me to get over that. This award is really special, and shows that my name still deserves some attention.”
Date-Krumm, who will turn 40 this year, has made a return to the sport after a 12-year of retirement, winning all four singles matches as Japan qualified from Asia/Oceania Zone Group I. She said: “I am very happy to receive this award. I just enjoy the challenge. Everyone was saying it is impossible to do that at my age, but I still enjoy playing.”
