Top seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Knowles 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 to win Barcelona Open BancSabadell and to became the first repeat winners in 27 years!
"It's been a great week here," said Zimonjic. "I'd like to congratulate Lleyton and Mark too. They've had a great week and it was a really tough match today but somehow we got through. Our last three matches were all really tough. It feels great to defend the title. This is one of the nicest clubs we play in and I look forward to coming back again next year."
This was their 20th tour-level title together, fourth this year. They defended title at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters last week by defeating Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi 6-3, 2-0. They also won in Sydney in January and in Rotterdam in February.
Knowles, how won Barcelona titles with his long-time partner Daniel Nestor in 2004 and 2006 said: "Congrats to Nenad and Daniel. I thought we had a good chance today but they've been on a great run in the past few weeks and they came through. I want to thank Lleyton for playing with me this week. He's a legend of the game and he almost took us to the title this week."
