Marat Safin arrived to Rio de Janeiro where he will make his debut on the Champions Series tennis circuit. Safin, who retired from the ATP World Tour last fall, will open against Wayne Ferreira in the eight-player event.
The Banco Cruzeiro do Sul Rio Champions Cup, held March 12-14 at the Maracanãzinho Stadium in Rio, is the opening event on the 2010 Champions Series tennis circuit, the U.S.-based international tennis circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over.
Also competing in the eight-player, single-knock out event are Jim Courier, Mats Wilander, Mark Philippoussis, Cedric Pioline, Mikael Pernfors and Fernando Meligeni. The event will feature $150,000 in total prize money, with the singles champion earning $60,000. Tickets can be purchased by calling 5521-3005-4023 or by visiting www.ChampionsSeriesTennis.com
Safin and other players used some free time to visit Maracana stadium where they had chance to meet legend of Brazilian football, former player and coach Artur Antunes Coimbra, aka 'Zico'!
