Argentina's Guillermo Canas has announced his retirement from tennis at the age of 32 due to a persistent right wrist injury. He had five operations and has been battling pain for more than a year and hasn't played in a tournament since July.
Canas won seven ATP World Tour singles titles (including the 2002 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Canada) and was a three-time Roland Garros quarter-finalist. His highest ranking was No. 8 in the world.
The decision he made 8 weeks ago, Canas announced at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami on Friday.
"I wanted to be 100 per cent sure when I made the announcement," said Canas, who recently opened his own academy in Key Biscayne with compatriots Martin Garcia and Gustavo Uribe.
"I tried again at the US Open and I felt too much pain. I played two exhibitions in Argentina in December, but it was not good.
"My wrist just won't let me play."
"I wanted to do it in my country (official retirement) but it was hard, but I think here (Miami) is a good place," added Canas "I have good memories here and I now have my own academy."
Canas was suspended from tennis for two years in August 2005 after testing positive for a banned diuretic. The ban was later reduced to 15 months after he appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
In March 2007. Canas ended Federer's 41-match winning streak at Indian Wells, and also defeated the world number one in Miami later that same month.
"I beat the most talented player in the world, in history," said Canas of his Indian Wells victory. "For me, it was unbelievable. And then to do it again 10 days later was like a dream for me."
