Andy Roddick won his first ATP World Tour singles title on Australian soil. The No. 1-seeded American defeated No. 2 seed and defending champion Radek Stepanek, 7-6(2), 7-6(7) in the final of the Brisbane International.
He said: "I don't think I've ever squandered a lead when I've been putting in first serves and making approach shots.
"The first time I served for the match I had a double fault but I don't think I missed a ball apart from that."
"I certainly don't know if I expected to come and win my first tournament after a pretty extended lay-off," Roddick added.
Marin Cilic successfully defended the Aircel Chennai Open title Sunday with a hard-fought 7-6(2), 7-6(3) victory over third seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the final of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament.
"This was the longest final I have played in and also the toughest," Cilic said afterwards "It was a mental battle out there with a lot of long rallies and returns.
"It is not easy to maintain your top game over such a long match. It makes me very proud that I have once again come out well in the first week."
Kim Clijsters defeated Justine Henin 6-3 4-6 7-6 in a match that lasted two-hour and 24-minute to win the Brisbane International.
"The level was so high and we were both competing our best. It's a good match when you're both playing well - that's what it's all about," Clijsters said to the press after the match. "I feel pretty good. I don't have any serious injuries or anything, and now I have the luxury of a few days off to recover."
Clijsters only had gracious words for her countrywoman.
"Not just today but a few days back, Justine was playing really good tennis," Clijsters said. "Like what I said at the All-Access Hour last week, I was curious to see how good she'd be in her first few matches back. I think she showed she's already a top player, very competitive and very talented too."
Yanina Wickmayer won her first tournament since her one-year ban for anti-doping violations was overturned, beating Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday in the final of the ASB Classic.
"Flavia made me play my best tennis," Wickmayer said. "I knew the ball would just keep coming back, so I was really aggressive. I knew I would either play amazing or make a lot of mistakes, but I felt really good and even when I made mistakes, I knew as the match went further I wouldn't make them anymore.
"I'm happy the way everything turned out. This week will stay in my heart and soul for the rest of my life."
