David Nalbandian has been forced to withdraw from this year's Australian Open with an abdominal tear.
Nalbandian strained an abdominal muscle on Monday while warming up before the Auckland Open in New Zealand, which was intended to be his comeback.
The former world number three has not played a tour match since May last year after being sidelined by a hip injury then recovering from surgery and has slipped to 63 in the rankings.
He notified Australian Open officials today that he is unfit to compete in the opening Grand Slam championship of the year.
Nalbandian didn't make any immediate comment about his withdrawal but earlier said he was very disappointed after sustaining the injury in Auckland, New Zealand.
"I didn't play much tennis for eight months so it is natural to suffer some small injuries," he said. "Although I am disappointed at the moment, I remain confident and positive about making a full-time comeback to the tour soon."
