Maria Sharapova suffered one of the worst defeats of her career today when she was beaten by Dominika Cibulkova 6-0, 6-2! Playing in just her second tournament since returning from a 10-month injury lay-off, she lost the first 11 games of her match with the Slovak.
It was her heaviest loss since 2007, when she lost 6-1, 6-1 to Serena Williams in the fourth round in Miami.
And today it could have been a lot worse! Cibulkova had a match point to complete a 6-0, 6-0 humiliation before Sharapova managed to put two games together to stop the rot.
Maria who is currently No. 102 on the WTA rankings, had won both her previous matches against Cibulkova and both were on clay.
Today Sharapova finished with 27 unforced errors to her opponent's tidy nine.
Cibulkova, the 20th seed, will now will face top seed Dinara Safina, who earlier put out Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, for a place in the final.
