Tomas Berdych defeated Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) to win BMW Open, his first title of 2009 and his fifth ATP Tour title.
“This is almost like a dream to be here doing the sport you love, then to win the tournament and get a prize like this,” Berdych said about receiving the BMW. “It’s absolutely amazing.”
“It was really emotional moments, especially the last game when I had a couple of match points already, and then I went to the tie-break I was so down 5-1 and it did not look good for me,” said Berdych. “But I was just trying to fight. That’s tennis, to stay until the last point because you never know what’s going to happen.”
“I’m pretty happy that it wasn’t quite a long time in between titles - the last one in Tokyo was just half a year. That’s really what I need to come up on the Rankings and get back to the Top 10, so great week for me and I was really enjoying the time here so far,” said Berdych, who reached a career-high No. 9 on August 20, 2007.
Youzhny said: "It was a tough match for both players. Tomas played really well on a high level all match long. I was behind for most of the match, which was not easy."
Youzhny was playing in his first ATP World Tour final since January 2008, when he captured the Chennai title (d. Nadal). He fell to a 13-11 season match record, including a 6-3 mark on clay.
"It has been a tough year for me trying to find my game and it looks like I'm on the right track now,” said Youzhny.
