Dinara Safina defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 in todays final of the Madrid Open to win her second straight title on clay, her 11th career title.
Safina overpowered Caroline in 1 hour and 48 minutes with 24 winners and three break points at the "Magic Box" tennis center.
"I was feeling confident from the beginning and tried to be as aggressive as I could," Safina said. "I got a little bit tired at the end of the match but I was still dominant in the crucial moments. Caroline is a great player - she's very young and has time to improve. I think she can be very dangerous."
Safina had a strong start to the season, going 14-5 between Australia and the European clay court season, but since climbing to No.1 on April 20 she has gone 14-1, finishing runner-up in her first event as No.1 in Stuttgart and now winning back-to-back titles in Rome and Madrid. She heads into Roland Garros as the favorite, and though she has never won a major she has come close - twice.
"I have come to find my place. I feel comfortable being No.1," said Safina, a runner-up at the 2008 French Open to Ana Ivanovic and the 2009 Australian Open to Serena Williams. "It was my dream from the beginning to be No.1 and I always believed I could get it. Once I got it, I was ready for it. That's why I think I'm enjoying it so much. Since I became No.1 I've played better and better."
Despite the defeat, Wozniacki will still make her career Top ten breakthrough in Monday's final pre-French Open rankings.
"I'm going one step at a time," said Wozniacki, considering her new number ten ranking. "I'm in the Top ten so I have nine more steps to go to reach my goal."
