Anabel Medina Garrigues blasted Ekaterina Makarova 6-0, 6-1 in just 60 minutes on Saturday to capture the Moroccan Grand Prix at Fes for her ninth career title.
Medina was the runner-up to Gisela Dulko in last year's final. But this year she completely dominated from the outset, winning the first set in a mere 24 minutes. She won 25 of the 34 points played. The second set was more of the same, Medina quickly raced into a 4-0 lead, as Makarova fared little better and won only a further 12 points.
Medina won titles at Palermo, Italy, four times (2001, 2004-2006), Strasbourg, Germany, three times (2005, 2007, 2008) and Canberra, Australia, once (2006).
For Makarova this was her first appearance in a final. Her best results, before this week, were quarterfinals at Eastbourne, England, Forest Hills, N.Y., and Seoul, all last season.
After the singles final, Makarova with her countrywoman Kleybanova won their first title as a team in doubles, defeating the top-seeded Romanian-Russian pair of Cirstea/Kirilenko 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
