Serena Williams was defeated by Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in one hour 29 minutes in the first round of the Andalucia Tennis Experience in Marbella.
The 95th-ranked Klara converted seven break points to beat Serena. Klara had only won two matches in 2009 before this week and she went into Wednesday's encounter having lost both of her previous meetings with Serena, failing to win a set in either match.
Serena saved just three of 10 service-break situations and won just 45 percent of her service points in the loss.
“I am very sad about my defeat, in every moment I wanted to play my best tennis but due to my injury I could not perform better” said Serena.
Zakopalova will next face Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic.
