Jelena Jankovic defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to lead Serbia into the Fed Cup's World Group for the first time in Serbian history.
“This is something we have wanted for a long time,” a beaming Jankovic said. “I am very, very happy that I was able to get the win today to secure the win for our team. You cannot compare playing for yourself in a tournament to playing for your country. It’s a special occasion, you really have to play with your heart."
Jankovic said her celebrations with Vranes and her teammates showed how much it meant to the whole team. “When I won that last point, we were all so happy, we jumped on each other and just started screaming. It was a great experience.”
The result means five-time champions Spain fall out of the World Group for the first time in its history.
In the fourth dead singles rubber, Ana Jovanovic came from a set down to defeat Maria-Jose Martinez Sanchez 36 63 76(0). The Spanish combination of Nuria Llagostera and Lourdes Dominguez were leading Jovanovic and 16-year-old Aleksandra Krunic 62 10 in the doubles but the match was unfinished due to rain and darkeness.
