Belarusian-Russian duo Victoria Azarenka and Vera Zvonareva defeated Argentine-Israeli duo Gisela Dulko and Shahar Peer in a match tie-break, 6-4 3-6 10-5 to win BNP Paribas Open doubles title.
"We had our ups and downs throughout the match," Zvonareva said. "They're very tough opponents to play. You have to be very consistent against them: as soon as we made couple of mistakes, they started winning. In the first set we were a little bit better. Then less consistent in the second set, but we came out for the tie-break very strong, and we're very happy about winning this title."
Zvonareva, who will next confront defending champion Ana Ivanovic for the singles title today at noon can become the first dual winner in Indian Wells since Lindsay Davenport in 2000.
“I think a single match and doubles match is a big difference, but definitely it's great to win the tournament in doubles,” said Zvonareva. “I think tomorrow is going to be a new day. I’m going to try my best tomorrow, so we'll see what's going to happen.”
For Victoria it is a third Sony Ericsson WTA Tour doubles title. She won her first doubles title in Tashkent in 2006 with Tatiana Poutchek and Memphis earlier this season with Caroline Wozniacki. For Vera this is fifth doubles title, having won Moscow in 2004 with Anastasia Myskina, Berlin in 2005 and Auckland in 2006 with Elena Likhovtseva, and the US Open in 2006 with Nathalie Dechy.
This is the second tournament Vera and Victoria play together, having made their debut in January at the Australian Open where they withdrew prior to their third round match.
"We pulled out in Australia, so that wasn't really a loss," Azarenka said. "We're going to keep going for the big ones and the Grand Slams. We'll play in Miami."
