Venus and Serena Williams defeated Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama in one hour and 16 minutes at the Australian Open to secure their their third doubles success at Melbourne Park and eighth Grand Slam doubles tennis title! They had previously won the 2001 and 2003 Australian titles.
The 10th-seeded sisters, who are also last year’s Olympic champions, won 6-3, 6-3 over the ninth seeds.
“Thanks Serena for being the best partner,” 28-year-old Venus said of her 27-year-old sister at the ceremony in Rod Laver Arena. “I would never play with anyone else.”
The Williamses are among 12 players who have won doubles titles at all four Grand Slams. They are now the joint third most successful partnership in the open era in terms of grand slam doubles title alongside Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez and behind Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver (21) and Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva (14).
