After Ana Ivanovic's early exit in the second round, four players have chance to become new world No.1 - Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina - depending on how they all did.
So what do they need to do to become No.1??
Williams and Dementieva both need to win the title. Safina needs to win the title but also needs Jankovic to fall in the semifinals. Jankovic would become No.1 by winning the title. Jankovic is also the only one remaining who could become No.1 without winning the title - she will become No.1 if she is runner-up, but only if she is runner-up to Safina.
Now after the Jankovic and Williams reached the semifinals, Ivanovic will be pushed down to at least No.3 on the new rankings.
If Dementieva and Safina reach the final with semifinal wins over Jankovic and Williams, Ivanovic will be pushed down to No.5!
“Now it's so much wide open to get to this No. 1 spot in the world,” Safina said.
If Serena faces Jankovic or Dementieva in the final, the match would decide who would take over the top ranking.
Wow, how many combination!! 4 ladies and 4 potential No.1's!!! This will defiantly be the most exciting tournament lately!
Good luck girls!!
