Romana Cvitkovic , our reader from Washington, sent us a new story from the Washington tournament. Few days ago she wrote a coverage of Troicki - Roddick match called Viktor's Win and I really enjoyed reading it. This time she was present at the semifinal between Viktor Troicki and Igor Kunitsyn and Troicki - del Potro final and at the press conferences. Here is the coverage of those two matches and the photos she took. Enjoy!
"Once again, Viktor Troicki proved to be an expected new Serbian powerhouse as he dominated Igor Kunitsyn in just 76 minutes 6-4, 6-2 at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, DC on Saturday night. At a post-match press conference he stated that he felt a lot more comfortable and in the zone in the second set and things were coming to him easier, so that is why he pulled away with a definitive win.
On Sunday, Troicki's first appearance at an ATP Final was a proud moment for him as it put him one step closer to winning his first title -- a dream that he has had since a young boy, he states. Troicki was up 3-1 in the first set and had already broken Del Potro's serve. Del Potro, however, broke back and at 3-all, 30-all, during a backhand return, Troicki tweaked a muscle on the lower left portion of his back. You could see instantly that it wasn't just something that would go away. It kept bothering him the entire first set and at almost every point, at which he then lost 6-3. He took a medical timeout and called the trainer over to work on his back and with each straining expression on his face, we were worried that he would call it quits. But Troicki wasn't about to bow down in his first ATP Final, he wanted to go for it all and give the crowd something to cheer about. In the second set, things just seemed to be going Del Potro's way after he hit winner after winner that Troicki could just not reach (possibly due to the pain since he is pretty flexible and quick on his reaches). Not only was he still suffering with back pain, something started happened with his shoes at a couple of points that made it seem like they were not comfortable anymore. Even with all of this, you saw his stern determination and focus to do his very best with no complaining.
And for Troicki, a guy that has only been pro for 2 years, reaching #71 after this lose is a career-high ranking that he is proud of. He states that he wishes he could have done a little better than 6-3, 6-3 but that he still wants to enjoy the moment. Even Del Potro when asked if he would come back to defend his title, joked that he might have to reconsider and stay home if Troicki decides to come back. All in a day's work for these two athletes who are both up-and-coming stars competing again this week at the Pilot Pen Tournament in New Haven. Let's see how far they get ... Good luck boys!"
Thank you Romana for this coverage and I hope to hear from you next year again!!
