Lindsay Davenport who was the 1996 Olympic champion, pulled out of the singles event at the Beijing Games with a knee injury, the United States Tennis Association said.
"It's the same injury she had during Wimbledon," said USTA spokesman Tim Curry.
Lindsay sustained the injury in the build-up to Wimbledon and has not played since winning her first-round match at the All England Championships in June.
Davenport will still play doubles with partner Liezel Huber, Curry said. She had decided that "it's too much to play both," after practice earlier today, he added.
