Jelena Jankovic will replace fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic as world number one on August 11, the WTA said on Saturday.
With no tournaments taking place next week ahead of the Beijing Olympics, Jankovic will end Ivanovic's nine-week reign when the WTA governing body's computer drops the points from the events played in the same week one year ago.
After reviewing the points breakdown, however, the WTA determined Saturday that as of the August 11 rankings, Jankovic will have 3,620 points -- eight more than Ivanovic and will become the 18th player to hold the number one ranking.
Jankovic was upset by 19-year-old Dominika Cibulkova at the Roger's Cup on Friday in Montreal, and thought she had wasted yet another chance to reach the top spot.
"At the moment, I don't deserve that spot," Jankovic said after the upset loss. "I am not in the best shape; I am not at my highest level. So it will take time for me to get better."
"The No. 1 spot doesn't matter," she said.
After the tour released a statement about her rise in the rankings, she seemed to have a change of heart.
"Since I was a young girl, it's been my dream to become No. 1 in the world," said Jankovic.
Jankovic's only title in the last 12 months came in Rome but she has posted consistently strong results.
She has reached finals in Toronto and Beijing in 2007 and Miami this year plus six semi-finals including two of the three Grand Slams so far in 2008 -- the Australian and French Opens.

hahaha, shows she's a bit of a sore loser. ivanovic is certain to become no.1 within a few weeks so enjoy it while you can jj =).
oh btw great post :D
Thanks!
Who wouldn't care to be No.1?? But I like JJ, she is my favorite, so I hope she'll keep that position for a while....
:)
This article takes statements out of context, Jelena said that the number 1 spot "didn't matter" in light that she needed to focus on getting healthy and at tiptop shape. She's not saying she doesn't want it to happen.

I know what she said, I post that interview also, but she did say "Doesn't matter the first ranking".
JJ is my favorite player and I'm happy for her, but this interview was taken when she still didn't know that she'll be No.1. After she heared it, she said it was her dream.
I can understand her, I can guess how much she was disappointed after loosing to Cibulkova. She probably didn't want to think about that No.1 spot at that moment. That's why she said it.
