Venus and Serena Williams each crashed out of the Olympics on Thursday.
Li, the world No.42, defeated Venus 7-5 7-5 and Serena Williams lost 3-6 6-4 6-3 to Elena Dementieva.
Li, the first Chinese to reach an Olympic singles semi-final, next plays either No.1-ranked Jelena Jankovic of Serbia or No.6 seed Dinara Safina of Russia for a berth in the gold medal match.
"Wow, I don't think you could see that in another country. They all wished me luck," Li said of the crowd.
"My family and my husband were sitting there and I had a lot of friends sitting behind me and that was a lot of motivation."
The Williamses remained in contention for a doubles medal and were to play a second-round match later. They won a gold in doubles in 2000 in Sydney.
"She played the match of her life," Venus said. "Not much I could do about it. So it was definitely a surprise result for me."
"I didn't serve well, it was what is was," fourth seed Serena Williams told reporters. "It hasn't sunk in yet."
Elena Dementieva who won a Silver in Sydney in 2000 will play her ninth seeded compatriot Vera Zvonareva for a place in the final after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 defeat of unseeded Austrian Sybille Bammer.
"I'm very excited about being in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games," said Dementieva. "I felt like I was playing well today and I hope to continue playing like that."
"She started really very well. I was just trying to stay positive, trying to fight and I had nothing to lose. I was trying to play more aggressive and that was the key to the match."
