Jankovic , Kuznetsova, Chakvetadze crash out of Wimbledon

Posted by Lana On 7/01/2008 07:10:00 AM

After making the fourth round of Wimbledon at the weekend, Jelena Jankovic didn't have any idea who she would play next.

She was told it was "a Thai girl", to which she responded: "Tiger? Tiger Woods? Are we playing golf on grass or what?"

Jankovic, the second seed, certainly found out who Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn was today, as she was beaten in straight sets, and so it was the first time since full seedings were introduced in 1927 that all of the top three women's seeds had failed to make the quarter-finals.

"Credit to her, she was quite solid, did not make many mistakes," Jankovic said. "It was hard for me, especially when you cannot compete at your best. I was not 100 per cent healthy."

"On grass you have to move well and be behind the ball," she added. "I was always too late, I didn't move as normal but I tried the best I could today."

Beaten second seed Jelena Jankovic took a swipe at Wimbledon organisers on Monday, unhappy at playing her fourth round match "almost in the parking lot".

"I was almost playing in the parking lot. I almost need a helicopter to go to my court." Jankovic told a news conference.

"I don't know what they are doing, you know, to put Venus on number two and I'm on number 18, especially having an injury and asking for a favour to play a little bit later on in the day," added Jankovic.

"They told me Court 18 is, you know, a TV court. And I said, 'But so are Centre Court and Court One. This is not a reason to put me on Court 18.'"

Jankovic is not the first prominent player in this tournament to express disquiet at being excluded from centre stage.

Twice winner Serena Williams questioned why she had been made to play her second round match on Court Two, but found herself back there again on Monday. Her sister Venus, the defending champion, also kicked off Monday's proceedings on Court Two.

Jankovic was also frustrated that her request to play later on Monday, to give her more time to treat a tear in her left knee sustained in beating Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday, fell on deaf ears.

"Yesterday I couldn't train. I was resting. I was icing. I had, you know, a few injections. I took a lot of medicine," she said.

"I almost spent the whole day with the doctors, with the physios, trying to get better.

"I was really not happy with the scheduling. I asked to play a little bit later on in the day, which would give me a few more hours to recover and do another therapy in the morning. But what can you do?"

Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska completed the destruction of the top four seeds at Wimbledon when she beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 1-6 7-5 in the fourth round on Monday.

"I did it!" grinned Radwanska moments after coming off court.

After the shock exits of top trio Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova, Kuznetsova became the latest big name to join the Wimbledon scrapheap.

Kuznetsova blamed herself for her downfall.

"Her game is very tough for grass court. Mine is not so tough. For me, I was playing unbelievably well for grass court. I was surprised by myself," Kuznetsova said.

"I don't know why at that moment (4-1 up in the decider), but I stopped doing whatever I was doing that was bringing me success.

"Suddenly I changed the tactics. You cannot change winning tactics and I just lost my chance."

Czech Nicole Vaidisova sealed her place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the second successive year after coming from behind to overcome eighth seed Anna Chakvetadze 4-6 7-6 6-3 on Monday.

"Luck was a little bit on my side today," Vaidisova told a news conference.

"But I don't think I won because of the netcord.

"I played a great tiebreak, I think that kind of got her down."

Chakvetadze rued her missed opportunities and the fact the net had not helped her but said Vaidisova had earned her win.

"It was a pretty close match," the world number eight said.

"I think she also had a lot of lucky shots in the important moments, a lot of net balls. It is good for her, she is a good player and she deserved this win."

She will next face China's Zheng Jie, who ousted top seed Ana Ivanovic last week and 15th seed Agnes Szavay on Monday.

"She's a great player," Vaidisova said of her next opponent. "She plays very well on grass. It's the quarter-finals, so it's definitely not going to be an easy match."
