Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic win Wimbledon doubles title

Posted by Lana On 7/06/2008 09:45:00 PM

Second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Jonas Bjorkman and Kevin Ullyett 7-6 6-7 6-3 6-3 to win their first Wimbledon doubles title on Saturday.

With his first Wimbledon trophy, the 35-year-old from Toronto Daniel Nestor completed a career Grand Slam in doubles, adding the title to the Australian Open he won in 2002, the U.S. Open in 2004, and the French Open last year.

"I can't feel much better than I do right now," said Nestor. "It's been a long time coming, 14 Wimbledons."

It was also the first men's doubles Grand Slam title -- of any kind -- for Serbia's Zimonjic, who played with a cast on his left wrist after fracturing a bone in a fall Thursday night during the team's quarterfinal match.

Zimonjic, 32, had been in two previous Wimbledon finals, in 2004 and 2006, but lost both.

"Hopefully one day I can achieve what Danny did. Now I think we can enjoy more and go all the way this year and try to finish as number one," added Zimonjic.

Nestor and Zimonjic have been on a roll this spring, winning 21 of 23 matches, but lost to Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and Luis Horna of Peru at the French Open.

Nestor said he was happy with his choice of partnering with Zimonjic.

"He didn't lose a serve once this whole tournament," said Nestor of Zimonjic. "I can't even count the number of aces he hit."

"A year ago we were having a lot of problems with both teams splitting up, his partner and mine, but here we are a year later and we have the trophy, so it's a great feeling."
