The No. 2-seeded Ivanovic beat No. 10 Patty Schnyder 6-3, 6-2 to become the first semifinalist at Roland Garros.
Ivanovic is yet to drop a set at Roland Garros this year as she bids to claim her maiden grand slam title, and she remains in pole position to claim the world No1 ranking from Maria Sharapova, who is already out of the tournament after losing to Nara Safina in round four.
Ivanovic is one win away from duplicating her Roland Garros final from last year when she was beaten by now retired Justine Henin. She also lost January's Australian Open title match to Maria Sharapova, a fourth-round victim in Paris to Dinara Safina.
Ivanovic needed three match points to go through, producing her third double-fault to waste the second one. She advanced in a light drizzle.
"I felt the rain a little bit, I'm happy to have finished before the rain," said the world number two.
Ivanovic now faces either compatriot Jelena Jankovic or Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro, who will contest their quarter-final later today.
