Tired Davydenko will enjoy a week off after Nadal defeat

Posted by Lana On 4/26/2008 10:45:00 PM

Nikolay Davydenko will take a week off after struggling in his 6-3 6-2 semi-final loss to three-times defending champion Rafael Nadal in the Monte Carlo Masters on Saturday.
“Physically, I was tired. That’s why next week is good. I don’t play any tournament,” the Russian world number four said.

“Today I was not a hundred per cent fit physically, mentally, you know, to play against Nadal.” Though he beat the Spaniard on a hardcourt to win the Miami Masters earlier this month, Davydenko knew it would be very different on clay.
"Against Nadal, it’s pretty tough (on clay) because he’s fighting, like hitting back,” said the Russian, who will return for the Rome Masters on May 5.
“Physically he’s in top condition. You know, beating him on a slow surface is pretty tough.”
“The ball is heavier (than in Miami), so slow. And the court is clay; it’s also slow. I tried to play my best. But if I hit balls, for Nadal it’s normal. He just runs and makes topspin back and gets running again.”
