Former Wimbledon and Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo cruised to a 61 64 victory over Japan’s Ai Sugiyam in the first reverse singles match on Sunday to clinch their Fed Cup by Paribas World Group Playoff tie 3-0 for France at Ariake Colosseum.
Relying on a sweeping forehand and slicing backhand, Mauresmo took just 1 hour and 15 minutes to dispatch Sugiyama and assure France of remaining in the World Group in 2009.
France came into the tie with Japan having lost their World Group tie to China 3-2 in Beijing in February.
Japan, which beat Croatia 4-1 in Miki, Hyogo Prefecture, to earn the shot at promotion to the World Group, is relegated to World Group II again next year with the defeat....more
